This paper describes the current state of development of vehicle telematics, and reviews its likely future and applications. The usde of information technology (IT) and electronics control systems ('vehicle telematics') to advise the driver and/or fully or partly control vehicle functions is described. Vehicle telematics can be subdivided into five main areas of application: vehicle control and driver assistance, route guidance/optimisation, environmental protection, fleet control, and road pricing. An overview of each area is presented, together with an outline of the likely future course of development in each area.
