The possible role of short range communications in road traffic management is described. Both roadside-vehicle and inter-vehicle communications are considered. The choices made in the context of the TELCO Italian Research Project, which aims at defining a communication network for cooperative driving applications, are shown. They mainly refer to the integration between the communications with beacons and between vehicles, the choice of the 63.5 GHz band, and the communication protocol. The results are also based on the research activities carried out within several European projects (such as DRIVE and PROMETHEUS) that have been developed in the last ten years. Particular emphasis is given to future cooperative driving systems; their performance is evaluated through an approach based on both simulation and analytical modeling. The radio coverage of the system, based on the 63.5 GHz band, is evaluated. The choice of the communication protocol is discussed.
