It is an established fact that traditional vehicle 'brake' Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) issues, such as groan and judder, involve not only brake components but also vehicle systems such as suspension, steering and body. Changes to the attributes of any of these components or sytems can can introduce NVH problems. Characterization of these subsystems and determination of their interactions, relative magnitudes, and sensitivities are vital requirements in resolving brake and chassis NVH issues. This paper presents a process based on subsystem target setting to optimize chassis NVH performance using a combination of experimental and CAE data. The cascaded target setting process is designed to support the requirement of vehicle manufacturers to rationalize development programms using computational/predictive tools to complete major development tasks. A case study of a vehicle exhibiting brake judder illustrates the process.
