The fundamental requirements for surge power units in hybrid electric vehicles are reviewed. PowerBeam is a kinetic energy storage device which meets the requirements for a Surge Power Unit (SPU), the critical element in making hybrid vehicles work efficiently. In the past, kinetic energy storage or high-speed flywheel systems have been proposed as an alternative to batteries. PowerBeam offers an innovative solution to the challenge of flywheel rotor containment, now identified as the key problem to be solved before flywheel systems can deliver their full potential. The design of the first generation PowerBeam is outlined, including potential applications. The full environmental impact of battery-based hybrid is compared with that of a similar vehicle fitted with PowerBeams.
