Design of free spans of pipelines in areas of irregular seabed topography requires information on the near seabed current flow. In present design practice the mean flow velocity should be specified along the whole route section with free spans. In the MULTISPAN Project the effect of flow induced vibrations due to other parameters such as angle of incidence, level of turbulence and velocity gradient is also included. The present paper is concerned with the devlopment of guidelines for optimal field measurement and computer simulation data collection strategies and best use of collected information in the formulation of a design basis for free spanning pipelines. The paer addresses the spatial variations of the mean current flow, the turbulence structure and the turbulence level as well as the long term extremes of these parameters. Field instrument strategies, strengths and limitations of computer modelling as well as the possible benefit of their combined use are discussed. Results from the analysis of current data from field measurements and results established by computer simulation of near seabed flow are presented.
