Research undertaken at the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL), on behalf of the UK Explosives Inspectorate, indicates that vehicle airbags may present a significant hazard to workers in the automotive assembly, repair and disposal industries and also to rescue personnel. This work has been able to identify hazards associated with the accidental projection of airbag modules within the workplace, and the effects of fires on both small and medium scale stores of airbag modules. Some information is presented with regard to the hazards identified for rescue and disposal workers dealing with cars equipped with airbags. The information obtained in this study will be used as the basis for producing guidance on the storage and handling of airbags in the car industry.
