The acceptance of large die or mold (tool) at the builders facility is the usual prerequisite before release of the die or mold for the use in part manufacture. In the past, the acceptance was based on visual observation of parts produced by the die or mold. This process has been augmented in many cases by CMM measurements of the die or mold surface to provide verification of global dimensional surface characteristics. The dimensional suitability of a part for use can be described as consisting of two major elements: global dimensional characteristics and local dimensional characteristics. The global dimensional characteristics are important from the point of view of the part functionality and include overall size and shape as well as hole locations, etc. Global dimensional characteristics are readily measured by CMM's templates or fixed gages. Local dimensional characteristics are much more related to appearance of the final product and are broadly described in terms of 'clas A' surface quality. D sight makes surface quality defects readily apparent in an indisputable manner. Particularly evident are surface waviness, high and low spots and tool marks. Use of D sight assures that the surface quality problems in dies and molds are detected before use in producting parts. and mo
