In situ optical object data acquisition by means of photogrammetry has made much progress during the last years. Single-camera systems as well as multi-camera systems are used in a variety of industrial applications. They are ideal for measuring automobiles and parts, airplane parts, ship sections, tool jigs, antennas, turbines, product molds or casts to obtain spatial data for process control, for CAD modelling or for estimation of differences between 'as-designed' and 'as-built'. Off-line and on-line systems are available allowing for measurements on objects that are static, moving or deforming under varying loads to accuracies up to 1 part in 150 000 relative to the object size. In this paper general attributes of digital photogrammetric systems are discussed and an example application in automobile industry is given.
