Air-column vibrations such as singing flame, Rijke's tube and Taconis oscillation are unstable fluid motions and caused by a flame, a heated wire and a thermal separation in a pipe. The response of heating section to pressure variations plays a great role for excitation of air-column vibrations. The chief aim of this study is to clarify the fundamental mechanism of thermally induced air-column vibration by solving thermoacoustic fields numerically. The results of computations successfully reproduced the pressure and velocity variations in the pipe which were generated, increased their amplitudes and finally settled down to those with constant amplitudes. Numerical results agreed with experimental results when the variations grew up with constant rate. From numerical results, it was revealed that the thermal damping effect periodically appeared downstream of the heating section and could not be ignored for the evaluation of the stability. The driving mechanism was discussed both about cases with constant growth rate and with decreasing growth rate.
