Loss of capacity on storage in nickel-cadmium or nickel-hydrogen cells which have electrochemically impregnated or deposited (ED) electrodes has been experienced ever since the evolution of these electrodes to the point of being incorporated into flight hardware. In the case of the nickel-hydrogen cell, Stadnick and Rogers (1988) concluded that complete discharge of the nickel electrode by dihydrogen in the cell was the key condition responsible for the capacity loss. On occasion, advanced nickel-cadmium cells undergo a capacity loss during storage which is sometimes recoverable and other times not recoverable. The phenomenon appears to be random and is unexplained, although theories abound. Investigations have been undertaken at Eagle-Picher Industries in an attempt to determine the causes of this anomaly, and to eliminate or control it.
