In western europe, car manufacturers make use of large quantities of thermoplastics that exhibit relatively low thermal resistance. It is, therefore, impossible to use coating systems which require high baking temperatures (>100 deg C) on these substrates, yet high quality in terms of weather stability and chemical resistance is expected. For this reason, polyurethane coating systems have become well established in the field of plastics finishing. Their market share in the top coat segment is more than 90 %. Recently stricter environmental regulations have required the use of coating systems with a lower solvent emission. In the field of plastics finishing, water-reducible two-component polyurethane coating systems have generated considerable interest. These coating systems are the material of choice for the finishing of plastics due to the case of application, properties achievable and the adaptability to existing paint-lines. Aqueous two-component soft-feel coatings for car interiors and primer surfacers are already in production-line use. Aqueous base coats and pigmented top coats have also been approved by the car industry and are now being used in production-line trials. Current development activity is concentrated on two-component aqueous clear coats. The first generation of aqueous clear coats is already undergoing weathering testing by the automotive industry and has been found to satisfy existing specifications.
