Cold startability of diesel engines is becoming more important due to the wider use of diesel engines in many kinds of trucks. The authors divided the cold start problem into the first fire itself and the transient process following the first fire and observed each combustion process via high speed photography through a transparent piston crown. The effects of fuel injection timing and intake air temperature on cold startability were analyzed in relation to the combustion pattern and cylinder pressure, and the conditions considered necessary for getting better startability were made apparent. In addition, the influence of oxygen consumption in intake air by flame type intake air heater equipped to several truck engines was also analyzed.
