Criteria of standard and of heavy fuel-oil are dealt with. The equipment of oil-bunkers and service tanks for heavy fuel-oil is outlined. Preparation of heavy fuel-oil by calorification and purification is looked at. The propeller-efficiency, depending on speed of ship, engine-power an on shaft-revolutions are considered. Slow running diesel engines running on heavy fuel oil are investigated as well as fast running diesel engines running on heavy fuel oil and in combination with reduction-gear. Heat and power ratio, fuel oil pumps, fuel-injection valves, lubrication-oil pumps and cooling system of diesel engines are discussed. Reduction gear, quick maneuvers ahead-astern; diesel engines on and off are further issues of the paper. Utilization of heat by diesel exhaust gases and the economical operations by use of heavy fuel oil for marine Diesel engines are looked at.
