For her larger and faster ships the Steamship Co. Nederland, Amsterdam, gradually wanted two-stroke marine diesel engines with increased power, mainly obtained by the application of more cylinders per engine, and by increasing the speed. Experience showed that the possibility of vibrations of the framework has to be observed for an engine to be fully satisfactory. The cause of these vibrations is the variation of the engine torque as this is developed separately at each crank. The system of loading and the mode of vibration of the framework are analysed. The means to avoid troublesome vibrations is mainly the angular spacing of the cranks. The influence of the angular spacing on the loading of the framework is shown. Another means is to change the elasticity of the framework by changing the dimensions and by using steel instead of cast iron. A number of vibrograms taken on the engines of this company are reproduced. Theory and experience were considered in the construction of the main engines of the passenger liner m.s. Oranje and the cargo ships m.s. Sumatra, Borneo and Bali. The results obtained are shown.
