When developing new engines, engine manufacturers have to design standardized optimum engines which can meet users' demands universally at appropriate manufacturing costs corresponding to their market prices. Reliability, performance and manufacturing costs can be picked up first as principal factors to determine the optimum characteristics of engines. It is not too much to say that the fundamental characters of these factors are mostly formed with several common particulars and parameters which are selected in the early stage of planning. Since these factors have antinomy characters each other, it is desirable to select suitable particulars which can keep the best harmony from the early stage of planning . However, it is not easy to estimate the weight and manufacturing costs of engines in the stage before drawings are made and it has been difficult to make such optimum plans. To improve this point, the authors have constructed simulating methods which estimate the weight and manufacturing costs of engines from related particulars without using drawings by formulating the functions of major engine components, and developed the planning methods of optimising principal particulars of engines reasonably and effectively in the early stage of planning by combining the above-mentioned methods with the method of estimating performance values and with the method of investigating the degree of contribution to the operating economy of engine users. This paper outlines the above mentioned planning methods of optimising engines and reports several examples of calculation.
