The research work reported in the article was aimed at the algorithm derivation for automated evaluation of the injection equipment condition using pattern recognition theory. Emitted ultrasound signals picked up from the nozzle holder and the injection pump are used for the evaluation of the equipment condition. The carried out work showed that the synchronous analysis of the time courses of emitted ultrasound signals picked up from the engine surface is connected with the technical condition of the combustion engine. In the case of a gas engine it is useful to concentrate on the part of emitted ultrasound signals near, the operational top dead center where almost all simulated failures manifested themselves substantially. Of particular importance is the information about the knocking which can be used for removing this dangerous phenomenon; this is important especially for attendance-free operation of generator sets for combined heat and power production. Advantages of the given method: The method of emitted ultrasound-signal analysis does not need any special treatment of the engine. Mounting of the pick-ups is simple, so is also the evaluation. The method can be used in the case of demanding operational conditions. Disadvantages of the method: While using the method, it is necessary to become acquainted with the rules of measuring technique for picking-up of the ultrasound signals and to stick to these rules. The size of the amplitude of the emitted ultrasound signals is connected with the operating mode of the engine and with its adjustment. In spite of these disadvantages the authors assume that the given methods of technical diagnostics based on processing the ultrasound signals during the operation of combustion engines can be very useful. In a running engine, there are some tiny worn-off metallic particles evenly suspending in its lubricating oil between mated moving parts. Under normal operating condition the variation of concentration of the metallic particles in oil has a certain definite pattern, but which may be distorted by abnormal wear. So the engine service condition could be judged through sampling between definite intervals and analysing the concentrations of metallic particles in oil. Through monitoring the running in test before shipment, the manufacturing or assembling quality of engine can be checked. Through monitoring engine service condition, the abnormal wear and troubles could be found and solved in due time to avoid accidents. The causes and trouble origin can easily be located to ease maintenance or overhaul work. The authors' present research on spectrographic analysing several key metallic elements in the lub oil to monitor engine service condition has shown successful results in heavy diesels used in oil-drilling rigs in China. The atomic equation spectrographic analysis with the aid of FAS-2C Fluid Analyser is a useful means for trouble shooting in the spots. To assure success of diagnosis of engine -trouble , correct sampling method and suitable sampling position are very important. The forecasting criterion based on the mathematical statistics proposed by the authors has both theoretical and practical supports. Monitoring engine service condition through spectrographic analysis of metallic element concentrations in lubricating oil cannot only forecast some abnormal wearing and hidden trouble in time but also avoid undue overhauling.
