By using CO2 laser beam, laser quenching is successfully applied to the crankshaft made of the material with the U.S. trademark MA 4561. A fine quenched layer is also obtained on the ductile cast iron with low pearlite content, thus the properties in wear resistance and scuffing resistance are raised. It does not need to change the technological specifictions in the original U.S. drawings for casting and machining. The laser strengthened crankshafts have already been installed on cars in small scale for road tests.
