The Genesis 70 series 145-210 PTO horsepower tractor from Ford New Holland exemplifies the concept of teamwork in development of an optimized FRP product. Molded Fiber Glass and Ford New Holland formed project teams internally and also worked together extensively as a cross functional team. The project was innovative in the use of continuous simultaneous engineering and joint testing programs with priorities focused on: reliability, timing, cost, and in that order. During the prototype and tooling stages the two companies worked together to aggressively reduce costs and refine interior details for optimum manufacturability. Simultaneous engineering also helped simplify secondary operations for optimum design and performance of the final product. The tractor also represents the use of several primary FRP molding processes and secondary operations. Directed fiber preform and SMC were used to produce the seventeen FRP parts for the Genesis tractor. Flexible SMC was used on the fenders and side foundations. A special machine was designed to bond the several pieces of the hood. There was bonding of preform and aluminum, SMC to steel and SMC to preform. A special paint was developed combining the prime and topcoat so the parts only needed one pass on the paint line. Packaging also required special design for shipping the parts from Molded Fiber Glass to Ford New Holland's assembly plant. Just-in-time production schedules have been established to service a global marketplace.
