The EV fleet of Electricite de France (EDF) is composed of 500 vehicles, mainly powered by VRLA batteris. Reliability and cycle life of the batteries are the major concern that drivers encounter on field. Quite early, an on-board battery management was pointed out as necessary. The main functions to be covered are given as follows: battery life recording, charge monitoring, battery management during driving, help in battery maintenance, gauge (state of charge indicator). To investigate this concept, an on-board EV battery management device was developed. Informations on the operating battery and cell behavior are given to the driver. Overdischarge can be avoided. Fast charging of VRLA batteries is monitored. After having tested this device on a small scale, the authors have started a field experiment on 20 EVs of their fleet. The aim of this trial is: firstly to show to users the benefit they can get by adding on on-board battery management device on their present vehicles, secondly to highlight the necessity to include such a system during the EV manufacturing.
