A simulation program developed at ORTECH using MATLAB and SIMULINK is used to evaluate conventional and hybrid bus configurations. Simulations of a series hybrid bus configurations are compared against a conventional bus configuration with respect to reduced emissions and practicality. The duty cycles examined are actual Toronto bus routes with data from the current bus routes used. Time of day and driving conditions are included in the simulations. Auxiliary components are included for heating and air conditioning. Plots of duty cycle, and passenger load versus time are included. Comparisons of emissions are made for both the conventional and hybrid systems based on the operation time of the engines. Specifications for the hybrid buses are near-term technologies with manufacturers and part numbers listed where appropriate. The effects of the duty cycles with respect to actual driving conditions are illustrated using the emission estimates from the simulations.
