Interest in permanent magnet motor drive systems for electric vehicles has continued due to the high efficiency and power density associated with this class of motors. Resources at Unique Mobility have been devoted to designing the characteristics of these motors to be well suited for electric vehicle applications. The desired characteristics for a vehicle drive system include light weight, use of a single-speed transmission, capability of achieving a wide speed range, and a constant power profile from mid to high speed with suitable acceleration torque at lower speeds. Conventional permanent magnet motor technology is not well suited for meeting all of these characteristics; the constant power profile in particular. Permanent magnet motors are traditionally considered to be constant torque devices due to the presence of the permanent magnets as the fixed-amplitude magnetic filed source. In order to achieve the desired constant power profile, electronic phase advance is employed. While phase advance is typically described in terms of field weakening, it can also have a different effect on the motor depending upon the system configuration. This additional effect is described as 'impedance-based'. In order to determine which of these two effects is present and which to design for, certain motor parameters and the control scheme must be evaluated. When a select combination of system choices are made, a potentially inexpensive vehicle drive system which is well suited for an automotive environment can be achieved.
