The role of gauging and blanking in controlling stamping dimensional variation is investigated by statistical analysis and experimentation for some simple automobile stamping parts. This study uses a simple statistical model of a piercing operation which has wide applications in piercing and flanging operations for many of the stamping parts used in automobile body assembly. The study shows that in order to achieve six sigma dimensional variation of the stamping parts under 1 mm, the gauging clearance gap must be controlled under 0.577 mm if there is no blank variation. When the blank dimension varies, this gap must be further reduced in order to reach the same level of dimensional quality for he stamping parts. A closed form solution is provided for admissible blank variation and gauging clearance gap. The solution is illustrated graphically in terms of the operating window for each givenrequired quality level of the stamping parts.
