The quality of automotive parts must be strictly assured. Defect ratio must be maintained below one per one houndred thousand, although they are mass-produced. Thermal spray technology has been studied in terms of the required coating performance, comparing with those of the other surface modification processes. Short history of automotive applications has been shown and the trend in those applications has been described. Some examples of typical applications for automotive parts shown in this paper indicates merits of thermal spray technology for automotive manufacturers. Demands on thermal spray technology for applications to automotive parts are presented in terms of materials, processes and periperal technologies. The number of applications will increase, if those demands are fulfilled by means of joint developments between the thermal spray industry and users.
