More than 70 % of structural parts made by Powder Metallurgy are applied in the car industry. Mainly for economical reasons, but also for the specific technical possibilities it provides, the interesting increasing the field of application of this technique in the Automotive industry is growing strongly. This paper briefly describes the most common applications of PM in cars, and then explains the different axes of progress expected from each participants in the manufacturing process: powder manufacturers, press and furnace manufacturers and especially the component manufacturers. Indeed, the component manufacturers must meet the demands made by the automotive industry, which are not specific to this technology, but that it is necessary to take seriously into acocunt in order to 'consolidate', the credibility of this technique with respect to the designers, in terms of: Quality, Reliability, Productivity, and also the notion of Supplier-Designer Partnership. Finally, a description will be given of the important new families of automotive components produced by Powder Metallurgy, which are either in the process of being introduced in mass production, or which are being envisaged for application in the near future.
