New car body requirements on weight reduction and structural behaviour along with the Lean Production approach, forced car manufacturers to reconsider their design strategies. Among other solutions, tailored blanks made of different thickness or material represent a great opportunity to fulfil the new body requirements; in particular, some characteristic examples of tailored blanks application on body components are presented. Furthermore, laser welding technology appears the right choice to carry out both design needs for improved very body performances and, at the same time, better product quality and systems productivity. At the end, Fiat simulated and experimental case-studies based on some of the described examples are presented.
