New challenging targets on car body weight reduction forced structural engineers to use more efficient computer simulation during the concept and feasibility studies. FIAT-Auto has developed a simplified FEM car body simulation in which local technical and technological perturbations are considered by the application of corrective coefficients to the bar's moments of inertia and torsional parameter. Moreover, an optimisation technique based on principal component analysis has been defined in order to reach structural targets, and at the same time to minimise weight. Some examples of FEM bar correction coefficients, due to local technical-technological perturbations, and an optimisation of a Station Wagon rear structure are presented.
