Static-explicit type finite element simulation code (ROBUST) was developed and built in the virtual manufacturing system of sheet forming processes in automotive industries, in conjunction with CAD/CAM/CAE system. An attempt was made to demonstrate how this finite element code can detect the slackness of the sheet in the automotive panel forming process, such like the failure, wrinkling and spring back. By using this formability detection system, the engineer can complete the optimum material and forming process decision. The authors will show the trial of virtual production of real automotive parts, which was carried out by H. Aoh in MITSUBISHI MOTOR Co. CAD/CAM/CAE center.
