A mathematical model is presented to simulate dry scrubbing processes for sorption of acid gases in filter cakes. The model can deal with both fixed and moving cake boundary problems. The data for major kinetic parameters available in the literature for reactions of Ca-compounds with HCl are reviewed and analysed. Numerical solutions for the Ca(OH)2/HCl reaction at 373-523 K demonstrate that solid state diffusion through the product layer is the rate controlling step in this temperature range. Chemical reaction rate is shown to be controlling at higher temperatures. The model is used to compare the effectiveness of different strategies for sorbent injection. Compared with continuous addition, the injection of at least part of the sorbent at the beginning of the operation cycle immediately following filter cleaning can significantly improve the overall efficiency.
