The unfurling kinematics of a rolled-up strip into a tubular helical beam is investigated for their applications to deployable/retractable space boom and antenna structures. It is shown that, in order for the strip to be folded into a tubular cross section widthwise and concurrently to form a helix longitudinally, the longitudinally parallel fiber lines in the rolled-up or flattend state experience continuous torsional motions. The changing of the helical radii across the strip creates a bundle of helical generators of differing longitudinal dimensional requirements, a challenge nonexistent in straight unfurlable members. This observation has led us to design a non-cylindrical retraction drum so that no membrane strain is engendered in the retracted configuration if the unfurled configuration is membrane strain free. The drum profile is derived for the special case of a circular cross section with varying positions of the cross sectional slit. Finally, the bending strains effected by the inherent kinematics are assessed.
