A visual color display - mounted in the instrument panel - was designed indicating to drivers whether the distance they maintain from a vehicle ahead (headway) was appropriate for the vehicle speed. A 1990 Olds Toronado Trofeo was equipped with a laser rangefinder, a color LCD headway display, a forward view video camera, an eye view camera, a multiplexer, and a computer-controlled video cassette recorder. One hundred and eight drivers representing three age groups participated in an experiment conducted on roads and freeways near Moscow, Idaho. Drivers were not explicitly instructed on how to use the display. Three headway displays were evaluated under two ambient lighting conditions - day and dusk. Initial data analyses indicate that displays were easily understood, drivers who initially maintained a shorter than a safe headway increased significantly the headway when driving with the display, the effect of headway displays on drivers was stronger during dusk than during the day, and displays that included a perspective of the road were preferred and better understood when compared to a display of color only.
