The superstructure of a vehicle rounding a curve tilts strongly outwards. As a result there is a change of weight distribution on the wheels and, besides diminished passenger comfort, a reduction of driving safety because the wheels become self-steering. This staggering or tilting can be reduced by attaching stabilisers to the axles to improve steering behaviour. Commercially available anti-roll-bars are made from steel. They are normally U-shaped, with the base of the U mounted transversely; stress on the centre section is mainly torsional; on the arms it is flexural. If the anti-roll-bar is not connected directly to the transverse arm, so-called linkage arms connect the ends of the anti-roll-bar to the transverse links or the shockabsorber strut. Because of the required precision and the need for motion in several directions, such linkage arms usually have ball joints at both ends. Subject to these conditions, tension and compression forces are transfered entirely by the linkage arms. As with many other components in the chassis are, anti-roll-bar linkage arms are safety-critical elements.
