A successful penetration of electric vehicles is likely to be seriously hindered and delayed by the limited performance of these vehicles in comparison with the all-round capabilities of cars with internal combustion engines, and also by the high costs associated with this new technology and the use of expensive and short-lived batteries. There are, however, a large number of special tasks in both passenger and goods transportation for which the required vehicle characteristics can be excellently met by electric cars. Therefore electric vehicles should not be designed to equal and replace individual conventionally fuelled cars. Instead they may be developed to fit into a novel integrated transportation concept, which as a whole offers an efficient and environmentally benign alternative to the present transportation concept based largely on privately owned general purpose vehicles. This paper outlines such new transportation concepts which may involve e.g. call-a-car systems and other sorts of 'private public transport' for passenger conveyance, and centralized goods transfer to small electric vans for inner-city distribution.
