The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is managing the transit bus portion of the Alternative Motor Fuel Act for the Department of Energy. The FTA implemented the Alternative Fuels Initiative (AFI) in September 1988 to allow transit properties to gain experience with alternative fuel buses that would meet the 1994 Environmental Proctection Agency transit bus engine emission regulations. The FTA has placed 61 grants with 48 transit properties around the U.S. under the AFI. Approximately 2.040 transit buses are purchased or planned to be purchased under AFI. The breakdown of fuels in these alternative fuel transit buses is 20 percent compressed natural gas, 18 percent methanol, 2 percent LP Gas, 7 percent ethanol, and 20 percent LNG. The other 33 percent use diesel fuel with particulate traps. The AFIO has stirred interest in bus and engine manufacturers to develop and commercialize alternative fuel transit buses. Today it is possible to purchase new OEM transit buses that use compressed natural gas, methanol, or ethanol as fuel. Data collection from the AFI buses in operation has been ongoing since 1990. As the number of AFI buses has grown, the need to make the data collection effort more efficient has also grown. A new data collection methodology is proposed that should increase the completeness of the data submitted, decrease the time to get the data into the database, and greatly facilitate data analysis. The new data collection methodology is planned to be implemented in late 1992.
