Within a sample test, the heat exchanger used inside the evaporative heat sink of the Hermes Space Plane was investigated. The heat exchanger geometry consists of a tooth fin configuration, the fins of which are positioned normal to the flow direction. As such, the heat transfer of the flow is increased significantly. The tests have been performed on a full scale sample. The fins were inserted in a cross-flow heat exchanger test arrangement with identical operating conditions on either side. Thus, the temperature gradients and the temperature difference between both sides were constant. This arrangement had the advantage of providing very reliable resuls, since measurement errors, which could have resulted from poorly positioned thermocouples, have been minimized. Evaluation of the test results leads to heat transfer coefficient of some 13000 W/m2K for a water flow of 0.06 m/s and a Reynolds number of 200.
