Noise levels in powerboats have only recently come to the attention of prospective owners. With the increased competition in the market place and government recommendations for acceptable noise levels, further attention and investigation into noise reduction practices are required. Part of S2 Yachts' program for noise reduction in yachts has been investigation of interlaminate materials, specifically for engine hatch covers and decks on the various models built at S2 Yachts. This paper presents the results of transmission loss and damping loss factor tests for six fiberglass cored panels. Additionally, two types of polyester mat are examined for their noise reduction characteristics.
