In this paper the use of ultra-high modulus (UHM) composites for primary structure is discussed. The benefits of using UHM composites in the primary load path for a typical large space structure are highlighted. Mechanical properties for both mature and recently developed pitch-based fiber composites are presented. Mechanical properties for hybrid laminates using UHM fibers and high strength fibers are discussed. Pseudoisotropic laminates using only UHM fibers are also discussed. Fabrication methods for spaceframe truss members using the UHM materials are discussed and the strengths of the various truss member configurations are presented.
