The size, weight and cost of transmission are largely determined by the dimensions of the power-transmitting components, particularly the gears. In addition to classical preliminary design and final calculation methods, nowadays simulation methods, FEM methods, databases and program chains are available for optimization purposes. These methods are explained using a number of examples. The calculation methods are checked in basic studies before being approved for general use.
