This paper surveys the overall competitive profile of the American automobile industry over the last 20 years and projects it into the next ten years, as it relates to Ford Motor Company's North American noise and vibration technology. Prior to the 1980's, automotive competition in North America was less than today, which meant that noise and vibration technologies were used in a reactive mode (i.e., to support prototype development, late in the design cycle). Competitive and regulatory actions over the last decade have been met with efforts at Ford to establish an identity of quality leadership. This meant that customer based, engineering targets were used to drive the design process; and design decisions were made earlier in the design cycle. Though these efforts were highly successful, the competition has not stood still. Product attributes are improving, such as Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH); designs are turning over more rapidly; and there is an increase in product segmentation. In response, Ford is assembling technologies to: perform NVH analysis even earlier in the design cycle (prior to completion of engineering drawings), extend the applicable frequency range of NVH analysis, and develop NVH tools that can be more easily utilized by design engineers.
