This paper reports a practical laser lap welding of Zn-coated steel sheets without forming blowhole. The essence of the method is to use the shield gas of O2:90 % and Ar:10 %. Due to its oxidizing power, zinc is converted into oxides, the high evaporation temperature of which prevents zinc to vaporize before the melting of steel. The protection of focussing optics from zinc spatter is done by using rotating vanes and multi-fold aperture. The results of tensile strength test and fatigue test were satisfactory.
