This paper will illustrate how the rail transportation industry has benefited from the General Motors Locomotive Group (GMLG) placing an emphasis on reliability during the design process. Details will be provided on how GMLG has applied reliability concepts such as predictions, growth tests, and qualification tests during the design development stage of new locomotives and components in order to achieve substantial reliability field performance gains. Also discussed, is the measurement system that was instituted in order to evaluate field performance.
