This paper discusses the new development of the research work on roll forging technology and its application in China, focusing on the following three aspects: roll forging theory, roll forging (RF) techniques and computer aided design (CAD) of roll dies. In the part of the roll forging theory, the forming characteristics of the front and rear wall contours and the forvard slip of metal within the constrained zone are mainly introduced. The former reveals the relationship between the angles of the front and the rear walls and the parameters of the forming process, and the latter gives out a formula to calculate the forvard slippage of metal within the constrained zone in a formed roll die. The new development and application of the RF techniques to actual production are introduced by examples such as connecting rod with a complicated shape and longitudinal discontinuous cross-section, front shaft of motor vehicles and tapered spring leaf with a high accuracy requirement in dimensions. The CAD general system of roll dies is usually designed on a microcomputer. However, the system possesses the features that less original data are needed, the cross-section drawing can be simplified automatically and the process and design program can be optimized. The system has been verified in production and its application is easy to be extended in practical production practice.
