In car body welding, laser beam welding is of evergrowing competition to resistance-spot and projection welding. While in butt-joints, the positioning of the beam spot is important for the welding result, in lap joint welding, it is less critical. Therefore, mainly lap joints of the car body are of interest for the process of laser beam welding. The advantages of laser beam welding such as high flexibility and high welding speed as well as the increased loading capacity of the components have to be seen in relation to the costs for the investment of the different welding processes. A laser adapted construction of the car body will make the laser welding process much more attractive for the future. In the paper, some examples are discussed concerning overlap and butt welding of zinc-coated and uncoated plates of a typical thickness between 0.7 mm and 4 mm. A 5 kW laser is used for welding, combined with a roboter system and a gantry. Both, laser beam welding of plates cut with a laser as well as the costs power meter of the welding seam as a function of plate thickness will be discussed. Criteria for the acceptance of laser tooling are presented.
