Narrow Gap Welding offers attractive improvements in productivity, cost effectiveness and quality but has proved difficult to establish by empirical experimentation. A combination of planned experiments and modelling has enabled a model to be developed that will allow the selection of submerged arc welding parameters for butt joints in steel up to 80 mm thick. The effect of the parameters on the weld bead dimensions can also be predicted. Problems such as lack of fusion, sidewall undercutting and slag removal have been overcome. Sound welds of 1 m long have been produced in 50 mm thick steel plate and conditions for welds in 70 mm thick steel delineated and demonstrated, mechanical properties have been shown to meet pressure vessel code requirements. A brief economic assessment of Narrow Gap SAW using unmodified conventional equipment has been made and the technique shown to offer significant cost savings.
