British Rail operates approximately 2700 turbochargers on main line locomotives and High Speed Trains. Due to fluctuating load patterns seen in traction, current service experience is that unfortunately the turbocharger is a high maintenance, low reliability item on the more highly rated HST's and high powered freight locomotives. One hundred new high powered freight locomotives, known as Class 60 are being introduced with a Mirrless 8MB275T engine rated at 3100 bhp that is fitted with single BBC VTC 304 turbocharger not previously used in large numbers in traction applications. Type testing on the engine, two rig tests and service experience with geometrically similar turbochargers are described. Sufficient experience has been gained to give the railway customer confidence to purchase 100 of a design of turbocharger with only limited experience in traction. These will be introduced into fleet service on the latest high powered freight locomotive.
