Aluminium alloys used in the aerospace industry are currently protected against corrosion using protection schemes which include the application of a chromate pigmented epoxy primer. Due to recent concern over possible health hazards associated with the manufacture and use of chromates, research at RAE Farnborough is directed towards the development of alternative corrosion inhibiting pigments. This paper describes a screening programme in which a wide range of potential inhibitors have been asseessed. The inhibitors were screened according to their ability to inhibit pitting corrosion of bare, unpainted aluminium alloy 2014-T6 in aqueous sodium chloride solution. Total immersion weight loss tests were used for initial screening and were supplemented using electrochemical techniqeus (dc-polarisation, ac-impedance). A number of non-chromate inhibitors have been identified with efficiencies approaching that of chroamte. Results are discussed in terms of probable inhibition mechanisms. Cerium (III) salts and organic mercapto-compounds are identified as areas for further development as corrosion inhibiting pigments.
