With increased demand for corrosion protection and current coil coating technology reaching maturity, precoated steel has passed from the curiosity stage to serious consideration. Automotive manufacturers worldwide are looking at precoated steel to protect critical corrosion-prone areas by providing a built-in protective coating over a sacrificial zinc coating. Manufacturing, cost and performance factors are being evaluated by the National Coil Coaters Association, major coating suppliers, steel firms and automative companies. Precoated steel can provide benefits in formalibity, corrosion protection, paintability, cost, ease of manufacturing and, in the case of weldable primers, weldability. To date, findings show that precoated steel offers advantages in corrosion protection and manufacturing that are not achievable from zinc plated steel alone. Some of the findings on the performance of preprimed steel in automotive manufacturing will be highlighted in this discussion.
