A system has been developed to produce titanium powders sufficiently free from impurities that HIP consolidated material can be obtained with equivalent mechanical properties to those of conventional wrought ingot stock. Mechanical properties are discussed. The total system for powder manufacture includes improved melting by plasma torch applied to the Rotating Electrode Process and a Class 100 Clean Room for powder handling. Powder samples are inspected by water elutriation for non-metallic impurities; various species of impurity have been identified previously as to composition and origin. All except for tungsten were found to originate in the plant ambience and have been eliminated from the powder by appropriate procedurs and equipment design.
