A superelement for the nonlinear lateral deformation of railroad track structures under arbitrary thermal and/or mechanical loads has been developed. The sixteen degree-of-freedom superelement has been incorporated in a finite element program capable of accepting any linear or nonlinear lateral and longitudinal ballast resistance properties and any fastener torsional resistance properties. Pre-buckled and post-buckled track deformations can be calculated or arbitrary initial imperfections. The code has been validated by comparison to experimental data and results are in close agreement. The code is being used to evaluate the effects on track maintenance and safety of a number of parameters which previously could not be accurately considered. Some sample results are included.
