Ultimately external tyre/road interaction noise provides a limit to how far the technically feasible noise reductions of vehicles are worth applying. It is therefore necessary to gain a deeper understanding of tyre/road interaction noise with a view to its reduction. Investigations, using automobile tyres over a wide range of indoor replica road surfaces on a drum, have separated the noise into two components, surface excited and tread pattern excited. With regard to factors affecting internal tyre/road interaction noise, a technique has been used to rank the transmission paths from the suspension joints to the body. This includes the measurement of vehicle transmission functions i.e. noise sensitivity, and is a help in reducing vehicle internal noise.
