A discussion of the world-wide automotive industry robots and hard automation as used in powertrain plants is presented. The degree of automation using robots is limited compared to the big welding lines in assembly plants. Most robots in powertrain plants are used for material handling and machine tending. The obvious reasons have been the relative easy integration of robots into those applications, and the elimination of labor costs.
